William W. Woodward was 19 years old when he enlisted as a private at Monroeville, Ohio, on October 30, 1863. Very few recruits performed well in veteran units, but Woodward served in Company G with some promise. On April 12, 1864, he received a promotion to Corporal for his good service. He transferred with other veterans of the 24th OVI to Company F of the 18th Ohio Veteran Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Mustering out with Company F on October 9, 1865, Woodward returned to Huron County, Ohio.
William W. Woodward was a hearty man and lived a very long life. According a roster of surviving Civil War veterans in 1941, Woodward, now age 96, was residing in Erie County, Ohio. It is very likely that William W. Woodward was the oldest surviving veteran of the 24th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment.
