Daniel Rose, the son of Lawrence & Thankful Rose, was born in Highland County, Ohio, on May 21, 1836.
Daniel Rose was the eldest of two brothers who joined Company I of the 24th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment. He enlisted June 1, 1861, at Hillsboro, Highland County, Ohio at the age of 24. Daniel served as a private throughout his war service with the 24th Ohio Infantry Regiment. He was wounded on September 19, 1863, at the Battle of Chickamauga, Georgia. Daniel never fully recovered from his wound, but he remained with the 24th Ohio Regiment and mustered out of service with Company I on June 23, 1864.
After his father, Lawrence Rose, died on 15 June 1864, Daniel became his mother's primary source of income. Following his war service, Daniel returned to Highland County and made his home there for the remainder of his life. His war wound was so disabling that it forced him to seek a medical disability pension for himself. His old friend in Company I, Captain Burch Foraker, signed an affidavit so that Daniel could obtain his medical pension.
When Daniel died on February 1, 1872, his mother, Thankful Rose, filed for, and received, a mother's pension. Thankful was so destitute that she did not even have sufficient money to provide for a tombstone for her son, Daniel. She apparently was also unaware that the federal government provides tombstones for its veterans. Hence, Daniel Rose is interred in Olive Branch Cemetery, Brushcreek Township, Highland Co., Ohio, in an unmarked grave.
