Julius Fletcher Pratt was born the son of DeMorris Pratt in New York, circa 1839.
Just ten days after the rebel capture of U.S. troops at Fort Sumter, South Carolina, "Julius F. Pratt" enlisted at Norwalk, Huron County, Ohio. He was 22 years of age when he enlisted as 22 on April 22, 1861. Private Pratt mustered into Company A of the 24th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment on 6 June 1861. He served as a private in the 24th O.V.I. throughout his three year term of service.
Julius Pratt was very patriotic, for he reenlisted and transferred to Company F, 18th Ohio Veteran Volunteer Infantry Regiment, October 20, 1864. He mustered out of service with Company F, 18th O.V.V.I., on October 9, 1865.
Following his war service, Pratt received a special war veteran's medal from the State of Ohio in grateful acknowledgement of his war serivce. The medal was issued only to Ohio veterans who reenlisted before their first three year term of service ended.
Julius Pratt kept in close contact with his old comrades in arms throughout the years. In 1891, the 24th O.V.I.'s veterans reunion organization noted that J. F. Pratt was living in Olena, Ohio. Oddly, the reunion organizers must have lost track of him, for he is not listed in the 1893 (8th annual) reunion roster.
Julius filed for and received a pension 12 December 1892. Julius died 25 April 1921 and is interred at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Norwalk, Ohio. He is entombed in the cemetery's mausoleum. Following Julius' death, his widow received a pension.
