David S. Potter was 23 years old when he enlisted in Company D on June 13, 1861. He was among the bravest and most respected veterans of the 24th Ohio Regiment and was selected to be one of the Regiment's color bearers.
At the Battle of Stones River, Potter was killed while carrying his battleflag across the cottonfield during the regiment's afternoon counter-attack from their position at the Nashville Turnpike fence (foreground).
David Potter's body was brought home and interred in the West Union Cemetery, Adams County, Ohio.
