Edward E. Mullenix was born October 31, 1840.
Only 20 years old when he enlisted as a sergeant at Hillsboro, Ohio, on June 14, 1861, he served for three years in Company I. Mullenix advanced steadily through the ranks, and on August 15, 1862, with battle eminent, he received a commission as a second lieutenant in Company I. At the Battle of Stones River, Mullenix received a temporarily disabling wound, and it forever linked his Civil War fortunes with those of Daniel McCoy. When fully recovered and restored to duty, Mullenix found Company I commanded by First Lieutenant McCoy, whom had been his junior until the Battle of Stones River. Mullenix's refusal to create ill-will between himself and McCoy created a lasting friendship that paid off later in the war. When McCoy was disabled by a wound on September 19, 1863, at the Battle of Chickamauga, Georgia, Mullenix, took command of Company I and led it for the next few months. As did many other officers, Mullenix received a promotion for war service to the rank of first lieutenant on April 21, 1864.
Following his muster out with Company I on June 23, 1864, Edward Mullenix returned to Highland County. With Daniel McCoy, he recruited the 175th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment for one year of service. At the Battle of Franklin, Tennessee, Major Mullenix became the 175th OVI's commander when McCoy went down with a disabling war wound.
Following his war service, Edward Mullenix returned to Hillsboro, Highland County, Ohio. He was very active in the Grand Army of the Republic and kept in touch with the 24th OVI reunion organization. He died April 12, 1893, in Hillsboro, and is interred in the Hillsboro City Cemetery, Hillsboro, Highland County, Ohio.
