Lewis G. Kies was 22 years old when he enlisted at Norwalk, Ohio on June 6, 1861. He served for three years in Companies A & F, and with the Field & Staff. Although starting out the war as only a private, Kies impressed his comrades and received a promotion to commissary sergeant on August 11, 1862. Performing so well as an administrator and as a provider of rations for the men in the regiment, Kies received a commission as a second lieutenant and assignment to Company F on May 1, 1863.
Recognizing Kies' administrative abilities, Colonel A. T. M. Cockerill promoted him to first lieutenant and appointed him regimental quartermaster on April 21, 1864.
Following his muster out with the regiment on June 24, 1864, Lewis G. Kies returned to Huron County. Kies kept in touch with members of the 24th OVI reunion organization. From 1891-1893, he reported that he was residing in Cleveland, Ohio.
