George B. Johnson was was 24 years old when he enlisted at Coshocton, Ohio on June 13, 1861. He served for three years in Company K. Starting out the war as a sergeant, Johnson first began performing the duties of first sergeant when George McConnell became ill during the Tullahoma Campaign. Upon McConnell's death at Manchester, Tennessee, Johnson received permanent promotion to first sergeant on August 16, 1863.
Following his muster out with Company K on June 23, 1864, George Johnson returned to Coshocton County. By 1893, George had contacted the 24th OVI's veterans reunion organization, noting that he had moved to Otsego in neighboring Muskingum County, Ohio.
