John Frederick Hettel was 20 years old when he enlisted at Monroeville, Ohio, on June 6, 1861. The mustering officer mispelled his last name, entering him as "Hettle" on the muster rolls. He served honorably in Company G for three years as a sergeant.
After mustering out with Company G on June 19, 1864, John Frederick Hettel returned to Huron County, Ohio. In the post-war, he moved to Delaware County, Indiana, where he resided until his death. He died March 7, 1915 and is interred in Muncie, Delaware County, Indiana.
