Robert S. Grimm

Sergeant Robert S. Grimm was born in 1837, the son of Louis and Catharine (Miller) Grimm. Both of his parents were immigrants from Baden, Germany. Robert spent most of his early life in Muskingum County. He enlisted in Company B on July 5, 1861, and served three years. Robert proved very capable, receiving an appointment as corporal on October 31, 1862, and rising to sergeant on March 17, 1864. After receiving his honorable discharge, he reenlisted and served for another year.

Robert Grimm moved to Mount Vernon following his war service. He maintained close ties with veterans of the 24th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment and was a staunch member of Mount Vernon's Joe Hooker Post Number 21, Grand Army of the Republic. In 1883, he became one of the organizers of the 24th Ohio Infantry Regiment's veterans reunion organization. Through the years, he retained the position of secretary for the reunions, while maintaining records and carrying on correspondence. He also was a member of the Baptist church.

Robert was married and had one daughter, Mrs. Walter Fletcher, who was living at Akron, Ohio by 1925.

Robert Grimm died April 20, 1925 in Mount Vernon, Ohio, and is interred in Greenwood Cemetery, Zanesville, Ohio. He was survived in Mount Vernon by his wife. At the time of his death, it was believed that he was last resident of Mount Vernon to have served at the Battle of Lookout Mountain.

In Zanesville, Grimm was survived by his nephew, Harry Grimm, assistant ticket agent for the B & O Railroad, and cousins Miss Elizabeth Calhoon, a prominent school teacher, and Robert Calhoon.
