Private Jeremiah Cole

Jeremiah Cole

Jeremiah Cole, the son of John Cole and Elizabeth Sherbine, was born in Pennsylvania on 17 May 1832. He grew to manhood in Lisbon, Columbiana County, Ohio.

"Private Jeremiah Cole" enlisted at age 28 on 1 June 1861 at Salem, Columbiana County, Ohio. Jeremiah served as a private throughout his war service with Company C, 24th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment. An injury forced him to accept a medical discharge from Company C on 2 October 1863.

Returning from the war, Jeremiah learned the trade of shoemaking as his profession. Still, his bothersome injuries from his war service were a limiting disability, and it forced him to file for a veteran's invalid pension on 25 April 1865.

Near the conclusion of the Civil War, Jeremiah Cole moved to Newcastle, Pennsylvania, where he met Adeline Lewis. The couple married on 23 December 1865. Jeremiah and Adeline had 3 children:

Clyde Milton Cole, born b. 27 Nov. 1866 in Newcastle, Pennsylvania.
Mary Cole, born 23 Aug. 1868 in Newcastle, Pennsylvania.
Elizabeth Pearl Cole, born 6 July 1870 in Newcastle, Pennsylvania.

Sometime after 1870, the Cole family returned to Ohio. Jeremiah Cole kept in close contact with the surviving members of the 24th Ohio Infantry Regiment's reunion association. In 1891 and again in 1893, Jeremiah listed his residence at New Lisbon, Ohio.

Jeremiah Cole died of Uremic Poisoning and Chronic Nephritis (today known as Bright's disease) at Lisbon, Columbiana County, Ohio, on 11 April 1911. His remains are interred at Lisbon, Columbiana County, Ohio.
