Daniel Burnham was 28 years old when he enlisted at Norwalk, Ohio, on June 6, 1861. He served for three years in Company A and mustered out of service honorably on June 22, 1864.
Following his service in the Civil War, Burnham returned to Huron County where he was active in the post-war Union veterans' organization, the Grand Army of the Republic.
Daniel Burnham is interred in the Grand Army of the Republic plot in Woodlawn Cemetery, Norwalk, Ohio. Burnham's tombstone is marked by the second GAR star to the right of the tree trunk along the bottom row of military headstones.
