Finley Black was born in Adams County, Ohio. According to the 1880 Census, Finley Black's father was born in Ireland, and his mother was born in Maryland. He arrived in Sinking Spring, Brush Creek Township, Highland County, Ohio, circa 1856.
At 37 years old, he enlisted on June 1, 1861, at Hillsboro. Finley was 5 feet, 8 inches tall with a florid complexion, and hazel eyes. Before entering service with Company I, he was an artist. He mustered into service at Camp Chase, Columbus, Ohio, on June 14, 1861.
Like many comrades of the 24th OVI, Finley found service difficult for a middle aged man. After roughing it for about a year, he received a surgeon's disability discharge on February 7, 1862.
Following his war service, Finley Black returned to Highland County. He became a portrait and landscape photographer. He is interred in the Boyd Cemetery, Highland County, Ohio. His widow, Eliza A. B. Black, filed for, and received a pension.
