Captain George M. Bacon
CAPTAIN GEORGE M. BACON
George M. Bacon was 22 years old when he assisted in the recruiting of an infantry company from Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio to serve three years. He received his commission as a first lieutenant in Company E on June 3, 1861. After Captain Samuel B. Jackson resigned on January 23, 1862, Bacon succeeded to command of Company E. He received his commission as captain on February 8, 1862.
Bacon participated in all of the 24th OVI's major engagements. As senior company commander, he was in command of the regiment at the Battle of Chattanooga and wrote the 24th OVI's after-action report.
With the return of Colonel A. T. M. Cockerill and Major William Sturges, Bacon remained on the staff as an unofficial field officer until the regiment's muster out on June 22, 1864.
Following his discharge, Bacon returned to Montgomery County, and made his home there.
